STURM und DRANG

The Sturm und Drang movement (literally “Storm and Stress”) was a movement that flourished in many art forms at the end of the 18th Century. It embraced extreme emotional states, a new intensity of expression with an emphasis on tragedy and profundity. Many composers were influenced by this movement, notably Haydn whose Sturm und Drang music assumed extraordinary depths of feeling; Mozart was also affected by this movement and it made a significant impact on the work of Gluck,C.P.E. Bach and even the young Beethoven. This course which will include well known music along side lesser known repertoire will bring us to the essence of the Sturm und Drang.
